What is a good way to learn how to hit the golf ball before hitting the ground?

atlbrave10114 asked:

Is there any tips on how to hit the golf ball first, before I make my divot into the ground. Its seems like I am constintly hitting the ball fat and loosing a ton of distance. Even when I hit the ball decent my distance is still short compared to most golfers.
I’m lucky to hit a 5-iron over 150! My best clubs are usually my 6-iron and up (short irons) so I know if I could learn how to get a touch more distance, it would greatly improve my handicap.

Somebody PLEASE help me!!!

  1. Probably have the same problem I have, too much up and down swing instead of around. Move back from the ball a little to make your swing flatter. Or experiment with moving the ball a little back or forward in your stance. The goal is to actually drive the ball into the ground but that is very hard to do for a weekend golfer. It is amazing when you hit the ball properly how far it will go and how much spin it gets. Problem is I could only do it once in awhile. I finally gave up and started to sweep the ball off the ground. Cured my fat shots but lost most spin.

  2. I had this same problem for years and there were 2 causes. first the grip. It has to be right, especially the right hand placed properly over the left and NOT separating at the top of the swing. If it separates you’ll flip the club at the ball, changing the angle(or length) you set at address and the club will hit the ground because it’s “longer”. Second, whatever spine angle you set at address has to be maintained. If your posture drops during the swing it will bring the club closer to the ground and hit there first.

  3. Hi, here a couple of thoughts. Try to notice where you are looing at impact. My guess is that it’s not at the ball. Can you make good contact on half shots? If not try one-quarter or less till you make solid contact and then move up to a three quarter swing. Remember, the goal is contact and control. Also, watch where your club first brushes the grass on practice swings and then play the ball at that place in your stance. If you can afford it, get a lesson or two with a pro. I did and within a year went from a 26 handicap to an 8. I do admit to practicing quite a bit. How do you hit it with a hybrid? You might want to drop the mid irons and go with hybrids. But, if you’ve got the practice time, go for it and try to figure it out. Golf is a lot more fun when you consistenly hit it where you aim.
    Good luck!

  4. The main idea with hitting solid iron shots is to “trap” or “pinch” the ball against the turf which creates backspin and keeps the ball airborne longer. To do this properly, you have to hit DOWN on the ball to get it UP. This is a tough concept for many golfers to accept. Most of the time, inexperienced players try to “pick” the ball off the ground.

If you’re hitting fat shots, you are probably digging into the turf before you make contact with the ball, which completely saps your power. A good fix might be to choke down on the club (just a little) to get the feel of hitting it thinner. Slow down your swing tempo and concentrate on getting your hands ahead of the ball at impact, which is another key to solid irons. Really try to exaggerate that “lag” feeling as you practice.

On last tip is to stay off of fake turf driving ranges, which lets you get away with fat shots.

  5. THE BEST DRILL I’ve FOUND IS TO HIT PRAT ICE SHOTS ON A DOWN HILL LIE. YOUR HIP AND SHOULDER LINE SHOULD PARR ELL THE HILL’S SLOPE. BY DOING THIS YOUR BODY WILL GET THE CLUB TO FOLLOW THE HILL DOWN. YOU’LL PROBABLY END UP TOPPING THE BALL QUITE A BIT. IF YOU MASTER THIS YOU WILL FIND THAT ON A FLAT LIE YOUR RIGHT SHOULDER WON’T DROP INTO THE SHOT AND CAUSE THE CLUB HEAD TO IMPACT BEFORE THE BALL. — NOTE: THE BALL HIT ON THE DOWNHILL LIE WILL GO RIGHT DON’T WORRY ABOUT THIS YOU’RE WORKING ON CONTACT NOT DIRECTION

  6. Hip sway comes to mind. One way to tell if you do this is to note on your follow thru if your left shin bone (assumimg you’re a righty) is tilting past vertical toward the target. This moves the bottom of your swing arc backwards.

  7. Contact the ball whilst the club-head is still swinging downwards. To achieve this one needs, a good “transition,” in other words a good lateral shift with the left knee and hips (pelvis) so that ,at the moment of impact, 180 % of the body weight, in pressure, is on the left foot!!!!!
A good drill is to push a golf club shaft (without club-head) in the ground ,6 inches to the left of the left hip,at the address position, and then at the start of the downswing, bump, the same, club shaft with the left hip, immediately, thereafter, clearing the left side.

  8. There are a bunch of good answers already……but ………. I would recomend a trip to your local Teaching pro. He can size up your swing in about 2 minutes and help you correct things quite quickly. Good luck

  9. I am not sure if I am doing the right thing, but I always keep my hands infront of the ball during address for all the iron shots. This ensures that I hit down on the ball with a decending motion. It works for me, you might want to experience on it too.

  11. well obviously the most important thing is practice, but that prolly not what u want to hear. you should try putting the ball back farther in your stance or actually aim at a spot about and inch in front of the ball instead of actually trying to hit the ball…. thats wat worked for me wen i started out…….also you could try practicing hitting shots on a downhill lie, but the problem with that is you wont know exactly how good you hit the shot because the fact that it was on a downhill lie will alter the results

  12. spend 30 to 50 bucks and take a lesson, the money u spend you will save in the golf balls you wont lose. and all the advice that you get on here is useless. let a teaching professional give you some basics. the game will be much more fun.

  13. Some good answers here. Bottom line is this. Weight shift. If you are right handed and don’t ever get to your left side, your swing will always suck. You can’t “pinch” the ball or hit “down” on it from your back foot. You have to get to your front foot. Start with weight shift and then move on to more complicated things such as “holding the angle and swing plane”. Good Luck. A pured shot that covers the flag is one of the sweetest fellings you can have. But you can’t have that until you can shift your weight.

  14. The problem could be casued by several different things not shifting your weight is probly the biggest, check your ball position have a friend help to make sure the ball is in the middle of your stance. This is probably not the problem. And if you move your ball further back you will create alot of new problems, like hitting the ball low and to the right because you don’t have time to finish your swing and the club face will still be open.[trust me I went throught it] What fixed my problem was 2 things take your stance and place a tee all the way in the ground just forward of where the ball goes. Don’t use a ball just practice breaking off the head off the tee. If that doesn’t help take your stance w/ an iron put a ball way forward in your stance. About 3in. past your front foot and try to hit the ball you don’t need to hit it good just hit it your body will have to shift wieght forward to get to the ball. Good Luck
