The end of the season came to fast for most of us, but it is inevitable  that the Winter Texans feel the call of the north , like the  migration of the birds.

the last day saw only 7  of us left, we played with one team of four and one of three, at the end of the round both teams tied at 32, a fitting end to the winter golf.

The most notable score of the day was a best round ever for Joyce who shot a 31 , congrats to Joyce.

With 6 more of our group leaving Saturday morning , we said goodbye to Sid, Joyce, Bill and Gerry as well as  Gary and Helen.

LaCopa golf Fridays

IMG_0168It is Getting late in the winter texan’s stay in the valley and it is coming to a close.
There are less and less cars in the parking lot, it seems like every day, another couple leaves for the green grass at home only to be greeted with the harsh reality of March and how cold and snowy it can be.

today we still had ten golfers out to play, the weather was real nice with very little wind. The scores were a little higher than normal with Sid and Kieth coming in with the lowest score of the day.

For the team score Sid , Howard and Dianna came in with a 28, nice score team White. the blue team of Gary, Kieth, Gerry and Richard came in with a 29, with Joyce, Judy and Bill with a 31 for the Red team.

With a Few more leaving in the next week, next Friday Will be the last for  the LaCopa Group  this year.

Winter Texan golf

As the weather starts to get better up north, the winter texans feel the need to get home before all of the snow melts away.

Some of the group that stay at the La Copa Inn have already have left and over the next 3 weeks all will be gone to their summer homes, some to Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, North and South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, Ontario (north and south)and a few other places.

This weeks golf outing of the LaCopa group saw us play with individual scoring and the best score on each hole used for the group bragging rights.
There was very little wind and since we are not used to golfing in calm weather no one could adapt and most of the scores were higher than normal, George had the best round of the group with a 32, congrats to George.blue team mar 14 2014

LaCopa League

This week we modified our group golf game. We played at Cottonwood golf course, a nine hole, par 27 course.

team Blue Team Red white teamWe made up teams from those who could attend our weekly outing.

Since we had 10 golfers this morning, we put 4 red tees, 3 white tees and 3 blue tees in a container and each player drew a tee to find out which team they would play on today.

Each team then hit the ball off the tee, to find out which ball would be played each player would roll a set of dice, the player rolling the highest number is the ball played on that hole.

From there each player would hit from that spot and it would be best ball to the finish of the hole.
This system would then be repeated on each hole. This made the game very interesting shots and tested the players ability to roll the dice.

golfing leagues

Golf clubs are always trying to get new golfers using their courses.
Most offer some good rates for groups of golfers from RV parks as well as those from other senior groups.

In general the bigger the group the better the rate per person, however to keep the lower rates, the groups have to have a set minimum of players.
Larger groups who can supply a large bunch of golfers also can get the best tee times, they can be Mens and Woman’s or mixed golfers.

Winter Visitors from the midwest and northern states as well as Canada, come for the warmer climate, make up the bulk of these golfers.
There are many golf courses in the Rio Grand Valley for every level of skill.
One thing most of these courses have in common is the firmness of the fairways, this is great for seniors as you can get extra roll on their drives.

group golfing on a breezy Friday morning at Cottonwood golf coarse.

Judy Bess, Gary Cook, Dianna Stewart

Today we played a group game, 15 golfers, with three on each team. Each persons score was counted on each hole, the best score on each hole was used to count as the team score.

Don Riesberg, Nancy Ruhlow, Jerry Miller

We all had a fun time with the wind blowing about 20 miles per hour, it sure helped to keep the scores high.

Group golfing for fun

I belong to a mixed group of senior golfers (Winter Texans) who play every friday. We generally play on a par three coarse where we have negotiated a group rate for nine holes.
We are always looking for some variations to the game to play which will include everyone and does not require a handicap. Not everyone plays enough rounds to get one and some of them do not care as they are not real competitive golfers.
This past week we played in four man groups with each player playing his own ball and keeping the score on a community card, this way each player gets to have his or her scores at the end of the day.
Only the best score on a hole is taken for the group on each hole, this goes to see which group gets the bragging rights for the day.
In order to reduce the stacking of teams, we put 4 tees of red, white, blue, green, yellow, into a basket. Each player draws to find out what team they will be on for that day.
All the birdies are bring great fanfare as they are rare accomplishments and are recorded for the end of the season windup.

golfing alone is never good

Went out golfing late this afternoon, playing on a par 3 coarse to try and fix some of the problems I have with my game.

I played alone because my friends are all mature seniors and do not have much get up and go in the afternoon, I think they are having their naps about that time.

I played the first 4 holes with the wind ( about 10 miles per hour) and kept the ball in the middle of the fairway, and chipped and putted
well. two over after 4 holes, not bad for me.

On the fifth tee you have to hit your across a channel that runs diagonally along the fairway for about 100 yards, (25 feet wide and 10 down to the water).

I hit the ball across and happily walked along the channel and picked couple of balls out of the water and finished the hole with a chip on and tree putts, not good, but happy that I got across the channel.

Now, all you golfers know how water affects the ball going over water, it just sucks your ball out of the air .
I think that is why they put the dimples on a ball, they are water magnets.

On the sixth hole which is 180 yards to the green and the fairway is about 120 yards wide, with the channel running along the right side.
I hit the ball and pushed it right, just short of the channel, about 170 yard with my 4 wood
(I told you that I am a mature senior)
At this point it turned into to a practice round and I hit another ball!
Why is it that every time you hit the second ball that it goes to the other side of the fairway.

Now I have two balls out there about 120 yards apart , so I teed up the third ball, hoping to hit it close to one of the two balls that I have out there, no such luck I dribbled it down the middle of the fairway about 50 yards.

I walked to the one in the middle of the fairway picked it up went to the one closest to the green (the one I hooked) hit the ground before the ball and it went about 10 feet, chipped it again and got it on the green, three putts and on to the next hole.

I left the other ball there, I was to tired to walk that far, besides it had already been in the water, at least I left it on dry land.

By this time I wished I had did what my friends did, stay home and have a nap.
